August Sermon Series
THREE WORDS (Everyone Needs to Hear)
Each week in August we will focus on “three words” that everyone needs to hear (and learn to say). I Love You, I Am Sorry, I Forgive You, You Belong Here. If we can learn these short statements and add them to our vocabulary we might just find our lives are more peaceful and fruitful.
August 4 (Holy Communion)
Scripture: Hosea 11:1-11
Title: “I Love You”
Theme: The prophet Hosea reminds God’s people that God has loved us from our childhood, and that no matter what we do: God still loves us. Everyone longs to hear the words: I Love You. And while we need to hear that from each other, we desperately need to know that God loves us and there’s nothing we can do to change that.
Scripture: Psalm 51
Title: “I Am Sorry”
Theme: Everyone makes mistakes, not everyone learns to say I Am Sorry. King David learns the importance of facing his failure and the freedom that comes with confession. But there’s a difference from just saying the words and really meaning it. But we’ll never be truly transformed unless we’re honest with God and each other.
Scripture: Matthew 18:21-35
Title: “I Forgive You”
Theme: Peter asks Jesus how many times we should forgive. Jesus responds with a story of a very unforgiving servant. Jesus teaches us to forgive so often we lose count (which is hard for us who like to keep score). But the fundamental truth is that what we have to forgive each other for is nothing in comparison to the magnitude of God’s forgiveness.
Scripture: 1 Peter 2:9-10
Title: “You Belong Here”
Theme: Deep down we all long for a place to call home. None of us like feeling unwanted, not needed, or left out. The church should be a place where everyone finds a place to belong; not because we’re perfect, but because God has chosen us to be a place where God dwells (and wherever God dwells, God desires all to join in).
