January 7, 2024 – “Gospel Orientation”
What is the “gospel”? The orientation of the Gospel inwardly centers on Jesus- to know him; the orientation of the gospel outwardly, is focused on Jesus – to make him known. The gospel centers on the person of Jesus Christ. Mark shows us how the gospel goes deeper than Jesus dying on the cross for my sins. Jesus himself embodies the fullness of the gospel. We begin to understand how the gospel is good news for us today by encountering Jesus who is both “Christ” and “Son of God.” This series invites us to get curious about this man Jesus so we too will be compelled to follow him.

The Proclamation of John the Baptist

14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the good news[i] of[j] God 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;[k] repent, and believe in the good news.”[l]
January 14, 2024 – “We’ve Never Seen Anything Like This!”
Mark 2:1-12
In Mark chapters 1 and 2, we start to see how Jesus is the divine Son of God. We witness Jesus’s authority as he does things that only God can do – healing illness, delivering people from evil spirits, and cleansing sin. The story of the paralytic brings Jesus’ identity into focus most clearly.

January 21, 2024 – Lord of Creation – Mark 4:35-41
“He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing” (In the Garden). Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him? Jesus is revealed to be the Lord of Creation as he commands the storm to be still. If Jesus can calm nature’s fury, what about the storms in my life?

January 28, 2024 – When Chains are Broken – Mark 5:1-20
This story grips our imagination from the beginning as Jesus takes his ministry into the throws of enemy territory. A man who is held in bondage for years and ostracized by his community becomes the touchpoint of Jesus’ power and compassion.

Then people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the man possessed by demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the legion, and they became frightened. 16 Those who had seen what had happened to the man possessed by demons and to the swine reported it. 17 Then they began to beg Jesus[d] to leave their neighborhood. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 But Jesus[e] refused and said to him, “Go home to your own people, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and what mercy he has shown you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.
February 4, 2024 – Who Do You Say that I Am?

Mark has been leading us to this critical moment. This passage confronts not only Peter but each us. It is a personal invitation to answer the question, “Who is Jesus?”. We may give the right verbal answer, but the answer to this question demands more of us.

2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves.
