Sermon Series: A Fish Tale

The story of “Jonah and the Whale” is often just left to the safe confines of kid’s Sunday School. (Which is odd because it’s the story of a man who’s told that God will destroy the city, runs away from home, and then is eaten by a big fish!) But this story isn’t just kid stuff. It’s a story about repentance, about what happens when we resist God’s call, and about who actually deserves God’s mercy.

June 12 “You can’t outrun God”

Jonah is the world’s worst prophet. God commissions him to call the city of Nineveh to repent. Instead, Jonah hops on the next boat out of town. The problem is, when your trying to outrun the creator of the universe, there’s not too many places you can hide.

Jonah 1:1-3

Jonah Tries to Run Away from God

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, “Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.” But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
